Coelan boat coating, a remarkable flexible one-pot polyurethane product from Germany, is now available in New Zealand. The product is very successful in Europe and the USA and was the subject of a 3 page article in the May issue of "Classic Boat" where it was described as "wonderstuff---like varnish only more durable and more protective". In a wood finish comparative review, "Classic Boat" reported Coelan to be "totally intact" after a 42 month trial and that the product retained "impressive clarity and gloss" . The review concluded that there had been" no deterioration" since application. A number of customers report the product to be still going strong after 10 years.
The product is highly UV resistent, extremely durable, water vapour permeable and highly elastic which is part of the key to its durability. Elongation is 335%. Apart from its fantastic finish, Coelan is ideal for sealing teak decks and preventing the wear which sees most decks due for high cost replacement or refurbishment at some point during a boats lifetime. The product is also perfect for finishing brightwork long term - no more re-varnishing every year or so. With special primers the product can also be used on fiberglass, metal , inflatable dingies, fenders etc.
Coelan comes with a range of pigments and colour options as well as non-skid additives and a choice of gloss or silk (matt) finishes. The importers believe the product could revolutionize the way we finish and protect brightwork and decks in New Zealand.
