Steve Newcombe has recently taken the plunge and become a full time marine broker with Gulf Group
He intends to use the link on Crew.org to talk about buying, selling, broking in general, what’s hot and what’s for sale. He’s not offering Ginzu knives for your business but simply an honest professional service for boat owners and buyers to consider. We’ll get a newsletter going for readers to subscribe to and we might even have a bit of fun along the way.
While Steve’s first love is dinghy sailing and he currently owns his 4th Jollyboat, more people may know him as the skipper of “Sliver” and more recently “Zen”. Sliver is a Davidson 37 which he owned for 5 years and raced regularly. He’s especially enthusiastic about shorthanded sailing, being on the committee of SSANZ and competing on “Sliver” in the 2002 and 2005 RNI’s. After a poorly prepared 2002 event, in which he earned his stripes he came back in 2005 and won the race on PHRF. Sliver needed a better rudder before the race so Steve went to Brett Bakewell-White who designed a foil which absolutely transformed the boat. On the strength of that he tracked down “Zen”, a BBW Titan 36 in Perth and shipped her over. Although Zen has done very well in round the cans racing and the shorthaul division of the Simrad races, the handicappers are yet to catch up with her so she is yet to prove herself against the big boys.
Steve is treasurer of Pine Harbour Cruising Club and The Jollyboat Association so we guess that someone must trust him. He has had a succession of successful businesses from automatic transmission servicing to manufacturing of women’s clothing and spring rolls. Selling boats really does seem like a natural progression.
