2007 Bay RegattaHow RaceTrack rates BOI Sailing WeekBay of Islands Sailing Week 07, Well I guess after a couple of years with medium to strong breeze the racing was due for a light wind regatta and that's pretty much what happened. Firstly, looking at the event overall, after some pretty steady growth over the last few years with the event going from it's initial 25 keelers to 76, this year the entries plateaued with numbers up only a touch (78), not really unexpected but the quality of the fleet is still getting better each year. It's also particularly good to see boats from Wellington, Nelson, Tauranga and of course Lake Ngaroto joining in, let's hope this trend continues as well. Overall, RaceTrack seems to think that Jim Beam, Revs, Final Decision and Whatever were the performers for the week, personally it looks like a very suspicious group of boats to me but who am I to argue with a computer? Final Decision managed to gain the most ranking places for their efforts with a 54 place move up the rankings. Looking at the various divisions, I guess we start with the much anticipated battle of the canters. The new Elliott 52 Outsider proved to be the boat with a small but distinct edge, with the Cookson 50 Wingz, as always, performing very well as well. Pussy Galore decided to go for a rating gain on IRC by pinning their keel, the question is, did it work? Well, if you believe the maths, the answer is yes, just, in theory. For boats performances measured against their RaceTrack history, Andiamo, Sea Harmony and Formula One were the boats looking good. In B division, the ongoing battle of the 40's, RaceTrack says Revs was the quickest from Psycho Circus, but this was mainly due to a big win in the last race of the first day, a race featuring a particularly fun parking lot I'm told. Dropping that race out, Georgia One looks the quickest, very narrowly from Psycho and Bobby's Girl. Looking at the C39's Akatea came out on top from Power Play and Moody Blue while looking at the division against RaceTrack history Higher Ground comes out best of those who finished all races, again from Psycho. In C division, with a very strong group of 36's, The modified Mumm 36 Whatever came out narrowly over the two modified Y11's Fineline and Force Eleven, mainly due to a good result in a pretty light wind race. Using RaceTrack's history to assess the races, it is again Fineline, Whatever Zamzamah and Super Severance that show up as having a good time. D division, comprising some quickish 28ft boats through to some slower 35's looked to be quite a battle on line. Waka, the T850 and the new First 34.7 'First by Farr' almost dead heated for line with the winner being Waka on elapsed time or First by Farr if you add up line placings, either way, the local Ross boat Thirsty Work came in third ahead of Namu and Final Decision. Using race history proved more of a battle with Final Decision ahead of Inner Circle and Thirsty Work based on percentage above history but if you compute placings then Escapology leads from Heartlight and Assassin. In Division E, honours for quickest boat went to the SR26 Space Station while RaceTrack best performer was the piedy Jim Beam pretty convincingly.
