The Grenada Team with Tony Evans win the Townsons for the 3rd straight time.
The 2008 Altex Marine Products / Burnsco Townson 32 Class Championships were sailed in fresh 18 to 28 knot winds on Saturday 12 April off the entrance to the Tamaki River. Four races were sailed with Sunday's racing abandoned after the winds got over 33 knots and the seas were breaking over the boats.
We watched the Young 88's try a start and were relieved to find that they did not make wimps of Townson's after we abandoned and then they also gave up. As the saying goes, phew it blew, stu.
The weather forecasters got our Saturday wind strengths totally wrong, forecasting 5 to 15 knots and at about 11.30 a front came through at 35 knots, the rest of the day blowing 18 to 28 knots.
Tony Evans and crew on Grenada dominated the racing winning the Class Championships for the third time on end. They had nice speed, sailed simply and finished with 3 wins and a 2nd. Bevan Woodward off Evening Star took out 2nd place overall with Jason Butterfield on Sunbeam, 3rd.
In the Altex Trophy division, Tony Kendall on Sunlight has stamped Sunlight's name on this trophy for the 5th time since 1999.
The Burnsco Handicap Trophywas won by Colin Hunt on Pott Black with Rob Ellis on Takahoa 2nd and Nevile and anne McGrath on Korora 3rd.
Teresa Toothill ran the races very efficiently with well judged start lines and courses and it is always a pleasure to have her in control of our racing.
