Platu 25
Being Introduced into New Zealand with the First Major Regatta being the Open National Keelboat Championships
Platu 25 – Design Overview With the Platu 25, Farr Yacht Design has exceeded all expectations. It is a boat that changes conventional thinking and creates a whole new class of sailing. Usually sailed by a crew of five, the Farr Platu 25 can be easily handled by four sailors. Downwind, in 10 knots, the yacht planes. It has been said that the Farr Platu 25 out-performs boats of 30 feet or more. Quality and innovation make the Farr Platu 25 the most advanced keelboat of its kind on the water today. “The Farr Platu 25. If you only sail one yacht in your life, this should be it” “A boat of inspired design” A 25 ft IMS Fixed Keel Racing Sail Boat designed by Bruce Farr as a Club and Fleet Racer. L.O.A: 7.53m (24'9") Ballast: 530 kg (1,168lbs) D.W.L: 6.74m (22'1") Main: 20 sqm (215sqft) Beam: 2.62m (8'7") Genoa: 12.43sqm (134sqft) Draft: 1.58m (5'2") Spinnaker (true) 47sqm (506sqft) Disp: 1,325kg (2,929lbs) New Zealand Overview The Royal Akarana Yacht Club recently decided that New Zealand needed an International One Design Keelboat Sailing in Auckland that was both affordable and fun to sail. Whilst everyone has a different view as to what that should be we wanted one that was fun to sail, strong internationally but also suitable for fleet and match racing, youth and adults alike. That led us back to the Farr Platu 25 which is very strong in the Asian region, providing an opportunity to build events in the Asia- Pacific region, whilst the Class is also thriving in Europe. The RAYC has introduced 11 yachts into the country, which are owned by well respected Auckland Yachtsmen and we hope that will be the foundation for a larger fleet sailing on a regular basis in Auckland. As a consequence the National Keelboats will be the first major event in New Zealand using this fleet of yachts. It has allowed us to reduce the entry fee, lengthen the event and accept a larger pool of entries whilst also focusing on attracting the best sailors in New Zealand. |
