NZ Keelboat Champs

Day One

Light Conditions, the first start didn't get underway until lunch time, with Roger Pagani (Young 88 Assoc) having a healthy lead on the first bottom mark rounding, which he extended to get the gun in the first race, with Alastair Gair (NZ Etchell Assoc) in second, Tim Lidgard (AYBA) in third.
The second race started in light conditions again, with a massive wind shift on the final leg causing sail changes, stalling boats everywhere, the tail-end boats coming in with new pressure and a few protest flags on the finish line. The gun went to Chris Maddock, Team Clariant Racing (RNZYS) who later lost out in the protest room, with Pagani in second and Gair in third.

Race's 3 and 4 had considerably more breeze, and the racing didn't finish till late on saturday with the last start at 1730. Pagani and Gair got the gun in these two races respectively.

A good night back at RAYC, with a few sunburned faces, a few beers and lots of exhausted sailors, especially after the 3 protests meant two parties were here until about 11pm - long night for the Jury who did a fantastic job.

Day Two

The breeze was expected to be stronger today, and it didn't let us down. The first race got underway on time, with Lidgard taking the first two races, Cameron Horne (Elliott 5.9 Assoc) taking another two, and Maddock getting one as well. Pagani still finished strong in each of these races to be in the top 4 boats.
More protests flags were flown, with 6 notified to the Race Committee by the end of racing.
Again the Jury (John Muir, Bevan Woolley, Doug Elder, Mike Allison & Lisa Mackay) spent a few hours in the protest room, so that prizegiving could get under way.

With some great, close racing, the final results were: NZ National Keelboat Champion for 2007 - Roger Pagani (Young 88 Association).
2nd - Tim Lidgard (AYBA), 3rd - Alastair Gair (NZ Etchell Assoc), 4th - also a strong team who raced consistently, Ross Currie (Tauranga Yacht & Power Boat Club), 5th - Cameron Horne (Elliott 5.9 Assoc), 6th - Chris Maddock, Team Clariant Racing (RNZYS), 7th - Jean-Christophe Verge (Cercle Natique Caledonien), 8th - Jan Dawson (RNZYS), 9th - Sally Garrett (RAYC), 10th - Gordon Gillan (Royal NZ Navy Sailing Club).

Special mention to the out of town teams, Ross Currie and his Tauranga team and Jean-Christophe Verge from New Caledonia who travelled to Auckland, NZ for the regatta.

Also a huge thanks to Fendall Halliburton and his Race Management team who ran the races in some very trying conditions on saturday.

It was a long weekend... but very enjoyable and looking at the results, some very close racing as in most races the boats were seconds apart.
