A Hot Rod is a yacht designed for speed, despite any measurement handicap. Yachts must be able to meet Cat 3 if required by the sailing instructions.
Hot Rods are yachts up to 10 metres. Yachts to class rules are not allowed, however class yachts that have been modified outside of class rules and carry extra sail area can be accepted.

The Hot Rod rule encourages:
  •      Canting Keels
  •      Water Ballast
  •      Prods
  •      Extra Sail
  •      Any size or shape of sail you like
  •      Good Humour, always
If a yacht wishes to become a Hot Rod they must first post their application on Crew.org.nz for acceptance.
A yacht must be able to compete in the trophy races held from time to time.
The Hot Rods are designed to advance Kiwi ingenuity in making a yacht sail as fast as possible and to foster young sailors imaginations to develop faster yachts.

We now have a trophy list:

Supreme 30 Hot Rod Trophy - Manson Marine
Awarded to line and racetrack handicap winner combo result for yachts up to 10m LOA excluding prods.
