Bay of Islands Sailing Week
Bay of Islands Sailing Week January 20 – 23, 2009
Have you heard the expression “You can’t afford NOT to”? That’s what they’re saying about the Bay of Islands Sailing Week. You can’t afford not to race at the Bay Regatta January 2009. Experiencing Hamilton Island Race Week (Hammo) for the second year in a row, Ray Haslar says “it still amazes me that about 70% of the 225 racing boats were cruisers: Beneteau – Barvaria – Hanse and ‘one-off’ type designs. An untapped market here in New Zealand of owners who rarely consider racing”. Bay of Islands Sailing Week 2009, like Hamilton Island (Hammo), has introduced two new divisions: Premier Passage (Spinnakers) and Passage (Non Spinnakers). **to qualify for these divisions, all boats must have full interiors, ovens and closed off toilets** For the Cruisers who rarely enjoy ‘windward-leewards’, Premier Passage and Passage Divisions will have only one Bay Race each day (approximately 20 miles) starting at the civilized hour of 1045 (subject to weather), sailing picturesque courses around the islands in the Bay. Stop Press: All the way over there at Hamilton Island – Bay of Island Sailing Week was noticeable. Ray Haslar and our Aussie International Judge Stephen Merrington, both workers at the Bay Regatta, with Richard Hudson (Oz-left) wearing a shirt he said “fell off the back of a truck”. At the Beach Party on Roberton Island (Thursday) – for your entertainment, ‘Grunta’, world famous for his Wind Warrior Radio Controlled Yachts, will be conducting Match-Racing off the beach; ably assisted by the Kensington family. One or two boats will be supplied but anyone with a competitive Wind Warrior should bring them to the event. Or be noticeable by your absence. We should all support these companies just as they are supporting New Zealand Yachting. Without our sponsors – there would be no regatta THANK YOU SPONSORS (Alphabetically): Boating NZ – CRC - Cater Marine - Crew.org.nz – Cotton Blossom – Far North Holdings – Fullers Bay of Islands – Great Escape Yacht Charters - Harken – Heineken – Lion Foundation - Mt Gay Rum - Northland Spars & Rigging – North Sails – NZ Yachting Trust – Oxford Sports Trust - PIC Marine – Pub Charity - Raymarine – REAL – RFD - Romeyn Woodcrafts Ltd – Sail World - Saltwater Lodge - VERO - Yachting NZ DD Gold; Northland Regional Council; Taipa Sailing Club; Robert Aukett Painter |
