Macleans College win Auckland Teams Racing Cup
The Macleans College Team consisting of Luke Deegan, Clark Hepworth, Hayden Cockburn, Lexie Langley, Michael Rodgers and Tyler Hogan have won the Auckland Schools Teams Racing Cup. The event was held over the 8th and 9th of April at the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club. Ten teams from 12 different schools took part, a total of 70 sailors. The event was sailed in 420 dinghies. Teams of three boats per school (6 sailors) faced off against each other in ten minute sprint races. The team with the lowest combined score at the finish won the match. The first day saw very little wind and only eight races were sailed. Forty five races were needed to complete the round robin. The following day once again there was no wind in the morning and racing was postponed ashore. Around mid day a light breeze of around 4-5 knots filled in and racing got under way. In the round robin, Westlake Boys and Macleans College stood out from the rest of the teams. Westlake finished on 9 wins, 0 losses and Macleans on 8 wins, 1 loss. Further down the board the scores were much closer with Long Bay College sitting in third on 6 wins, then a three way tie for fourth between Auckland Grammar, Saint Kentigerns College and Westlake Girls all on 4 wins. Auckland Grammar came out on top of the tie break to take 4th place. The finals were incredibly close, Macleans just managed to sneak ahead before the finish in the first race, Westlake took the second race on the last beat to the finish and Macleans used some aggressive teams racing tactics at the top mark to seal a convincing win in the third and final race. Macleans are traveling up to Whangarei this weekend for the Upper North Island Championships, then back to Bucklands Beach for an intensive training program before the National Championship, also in Whangarei from the 28th April to the 2nd of may.
