Kia Kaha update from the Sea of Cortez

agua13_1.JPG

Hi all, we are back on the radar having spent the last 6 weeks heading north from La Paz into the Sea of Cortez, Mexico. We are currently in Santa Rosalia where we can provision and refuel once again (and where Kirstin can have a proper shower and do laundry after 6 long weeks!) before heading further north again into the Bahia Los Angeles area.
So far the hurricane season has been unseasonably mild and no one seems to know why. Ok by us though. We had a small one pass the southern tip of the Baja but it didn’t have a major impact on us, just a sprinkle of rain and a bit of breeze. This was a welcome respite from the dry that engulfs us.
The only other weather event of note was what the Mexicans call a
Chubasco. It is a night time thunder and lightening storm where winds can reach 50knots. We had some gusts in the mid 40’s and lots of rain and wind.
We battened down the hatches just in time and showered ourselves in the downpour then sat back and enjoyed the light show.
We have been eating pretty well, and although fresh produce is hard to come by we have more than made up for it with fresh sea food everyday. We go spear fishing and clam gathering most days and there is no shortage of goodies out there!
It all sounds rather lovely eh? Well we are trying to forget the three week stint of sanding, varnishing and mosquito proofing, not to mention all the other constant boat work! We plug away in the hope that we are making a dent on the “list” and that our hard work will pay off.
The Baja is so incredibly dry and hot that we both are craving green trees and fresh water. A nice cold New Zealand southerly would be a blessing!
We keep telling ourselves that the northern winter is only a couple of months away, and with that we will be able to head south in search of tropical paradise….and waves!
The following is more of a photo essay than a blow-by-blow account of our every movement. We hope you enjoy.
Miss you all very much and love you lots. Kirstin and Mike.
