Pete currently owns the Young 8.4 RnB and has bought 'Jonathan' (as in Livingston Seagull) because he wants to do some island cruising (and by the look of the boat, spend some time on the end of a varnish brush.) We'll post pics and observations on Monday - Friday photos Posted 29/07/2005 In the can?: 28 July - NZ's longest standing solo race will probably be given the axe by New Plymouth Yacht Club but there is the opportunity for another enterprising club to pick it up. The single handed slog from New Plymouth to Southern Queensland has been held every four years since 1970, but numbers have dwindled and the club claims it doesn't have the resources to hold another event. All the major systems have passed their tests and the boat achieved 19 knots in light conditions. Read all about it MORE NEWS ADDED OVERNIGHT Posted 28/07/2005 The country that can do no wrong: 28 July - we are getting it completely right overseas. Our NZL sailors are excelling in the Splash Worlds (what's a Splash? kind of like a Laser but smaller) with Andy Maloney scoring a bullet overnight and sittin in third. In the meantime at the OK Dinghy Worlds in Denmark, 2002 World Champion Greg Wilcox won both of the races with a host of other New Zealanders featuring in the top 10. The link is www.ayba.org.nz, and there will be a permanent link to the website on Crew's Resources section (bottom left of this page) Posted 27/07/2005 Europe calling: 27 July - After the Athens Olympics the powers that be decided to replace the women's single handed class boat, the Europe, with the Laser Radial. Consequently the Europes have lost some of their racing focus, but there are a number of excellent boats in the country. The South Island has traditionally had a strong set of Europe sailors and Tom Arthur is trying to find Europe sailors from around NZ so that he can get them together for some racing. Read it Posted 26/07/2005 Alright!: 26 July - Kiwi Greg Wilcox scored his first win in the second race of the OK Dinghy Worlds in Denmark, thanks to good tactical decisions upwind. Fellow Kiwi Steve McDowell also found his rhythm with a second placing in the first race. The two are placed fourth and sixth after day 1. Wilcox comments : “Today was hard, and one thing is for sure, this is going to be a high scoring regatta. Silver at Worlds: 24 July - The New Zealand team have won silver at the Yngling World Championships overnight in Mondee, Austria. Sharon Ferris, Raynor Smeal and Ashley Holtum secured their place in the final race of the regatta last night. Meanwhile, the final session of racing in the ISAF Youth Worlds was abandoned and the decision denied our top placed Kiwi a chance to climb into medal position. Currently at Westpark and getting ready for sailing duty, the yacht will soon be available for viewing by appointment. And you have to see the interior on this beauty. view photos Posted 23/07/2005 Elliott 5.9s in Taupo: 23 July by Ian McIntosh - Last weekend saw a fleet of 10 Elliott 5.9’s get together in Taupo for Race 3 of the Appletons Estate Rum Travellers Series. Numbers were slightly down, with several boats undergoing maintenance, but boats came from as far Kerikeri and Wellington, and as always the racing was close. More Posted 23/07/2005 Redress drops girls' placing: 22 July - An American team winning redress has seen the Kiwi girls drop to second place at the YngLing Worlds. With four races left, and proven speed in light conditions, Sharon Ferris says "tomorrow is another day and tomorrow we are expecting light and shifty conditions again." Meanwhile Laser sailor Blair McLay sits in fourth at the Youth Worlds and still has a chance at a podium place. More Posted 22/07/2005 Kiwis lead YngLing Worlds!: 21 July - Sharon Ferris, Raynor Smeal and Ashley Holtum are winning the YngLing Worlds in Austria. The team have made some smart tactical decisions to notch up two wins out of six races. Their sails are self designed and home built and the girls are known as one of the most focused NZ sailing teams. The light and shifty conditions are similar to those they are likely to experience at the 2008 Olympics. Tomorrow is a lay-day. Team emails - Regatta website - Interview Posted 20/07/2005 Oh la la: 20 July - The world’s newest super maxi yacht, Sydney-based New Zealander Neville Crichton’s 30-metre (98 feet) Alfa Romeo, hit the water in Sydney Harbour late yesterday. The striking-looking boat is already on the register of the RNZYS. It will make its racing debut at Hamilton Island in late August, then will be sailed to New Zealand for further sea trials before returning to Sydney to contest the Rolex Sydney Hobart. More Posted 20/07/2005 Kiwis show speed at Youth Worlds: 19 July YNZ - Blair McLay, the top placed Kiwi has slipped to 5th place at the ISAF Youth Worlds, but Olivia Powrie in the Laser Radial has sailed to her potential and moved into 11th position. More Posted 19/07/2005 RaceTrack now in Multiples: 19 July by Mark Mulcare - RaceTrack, Crew's unofficial ranking system of 1000+ NZ race yachts, now includes multihulls, and Mark Mulcare gives us his version of Saturday's racing in Auckland. More Posted 19/07/2005 OK Update: 17 July - The Kiwi team are posting solid places after Day 2 of the Danish OK Nationals. Four races have been sailed and standings for the NZers are Mark Perrow 5th - Trent Pryce 10th - Greg Wilcox 12th - Alistair Deaves 15th - Darren Hunt 16th - Wayne Avery 17th - Grant Pedersen 18th - Phil Rzepecky 19th - Mike Wilde 22nd. The forecast breeze for tomorrow is around 15 knots. Perrow says the team have enjoyed some great downwind runs and that drops will help the overall placings. Posted 16/07/2005 Super times ahead: 16 July - An 8,000 mile superyacht rally, encompassing seven Pacific legs, will pass through New Zealand in Feb 07. The Rally is organised by a consortium of superyacht agents, resort owners, and governments, in order to promote the benefits of cruising in the South Pacific (and spending a bit of money on refits, big parties, etc while they are about it). Posted 14/07/2005 Aces High takes a topple: 14 July - Aces High, the Vickers designed 25 footer, is currently sitting on the hard in Port Moresby, PNG awaiting a verdict from its insurer, following a fall from the hard stand. The boat was once a top performer, winning the Coastal Classic Div 2 in 1999. More Posted 14/07/2005 IRC/ORC decision announced: 13 July - Yachting New Zealand today announced that it has decided to continue the use of the ORC handicapping system, at the same time as recognising IRC as a valid rating system. Owners will be able to apply for IRC certification through YNZ from 1 January 2006. More Posted 13/07/2005 23 year old Kiwi first to sign up for Sydney-Hobart: 12 July - Within hours of the Notice of Race and Application to Enter being posted on the web site, the CYCA today received its first nomination – the 10.97m LOA Navenka, a 26-year-old New Zealand yacht whose skipper, Phil Chisholm, is three years younger than the boat. More Posted 12/07/2005 Maximus sits out Cowes: 12 July - Maximus will cruise through Cowes Week, opting out of racing because of the risks for big boats sailing in shallow water in very large fleets. Instead the crew are schmoozing sponsors, and taking part in another kind of racing: Soap Box Derbies! (pictured). Posted 12/07/2005 More than OK: 11 July - Kiwi sailor Greg Wilcox is currently lying second at Warnemünder Woche in Germany. Greg, who is a past world champion, is one of the team to represent New Zealand at the World OK Dinghy Champs in Denmark July 23-30. Greg won two of the six races in Warnemunder in very tricky conditions. View photos Posted 11/07/2005 Extreme conditions for first SIMRAD: 9 July - The first race in the SIMRAD Barrier Triple Series was described as "one tough race". The job of the two-handed crews in forecast 25-35SW was made harder by massive squalls and very rough seas. Three dismastings, one MOB, 14 retirees and enough shreddings to keep local sailmakers busy. The last boat finished at 5.20pm on Saturday. Regatta website Posted 8/07/2005 Keep an eye out for the 70: 8 July - A Volvo 70 will be passing through NZL this month. The boat, which passed its self righting test yesterday in Melbourne, will be raced by Australian Grant Wharington and crew in the 60,560 kilometre Volvo Ocean Race. The race commences on 5 Nov in Spain and has a pit stop in Wellington in Feb 06. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, on England's South Coast, is exposed, throws up all sailing conditions, and is well linked to transport. More Posted 5/07/2005 Manukau Harbour cleans up: 24 June - Research has shown that the Manukau Harbour should now be safe to swim in, except for after a heavy rainfall. Following the closure of 500ha of oxidisation ponds in 2001, which had led to a buildup of fine clay and silt in the Harbour, the water is returning to more acceptable pollution levels. Posted 5/07/2005 New marina for Lyttleton: 23 June - After years of waiting, a new marina is planned for Lyttelton Harbour. Newstalk ZB reported this morning that Covington Group Holdings, owner of Gulf Harbour Marina north of Auckland, intends to build a 400 berth facility and has signed an agreement with the Banks Peninsula District Council. Posted 5/07/2005 Anna K hangs out with Team NZ: 15 June - Anna Kournikova spent time with Team New Zealand today as she visited the city of Valencia to promote the Amercia's Cup. 'Hello' Magazine says that she made quite an impression on the Emirites sponsored Team New Zealand. She took the helm for a while, and whether it's an omen or not, we don't know, but the boat's mast was damaged in the pre-start just hours after she shimmied up it. Emirates Team New Zealand, along with the 10 other challengers and defender Alinghi, is ready to start a five-day match-racing regatta. Posted 5/07/2005 Sir Tom Clarke dies: 14 June - The man who owned New Zealand's first maxi yacht and attended every America's Cup since World War II died today, aged 88. Sir Tom Clark was a prominent businesman, a sponsor and mentor to Sir Peter Blake, and a trustee of Team NZ. He was also a driving force behind the NZ Yachting Trust and a much loved and respected member of the yachting community. Posted 5/07/2005 |
