Top ten Kiwi finisher at 18' Worlds:
27 Feb - Sailing in old boats in a class that favours the brand new, the New Zealand team at the 18' Worlds finished with one top ten placing and some very good race by race results. CT Sailbattens sailed by Phil Airey, Alex Vallings and Shayne Young, finished in eighth overall - the best result in 30 years for the Kiwis - with Fishers Fine Arts Helly Hansen in 11th, and Ssangyong NZ in 27th. "The three NZ boats were the oldest boats in the fleet so to achieve these results shows the level of raw talent we have within the class. It is now the goal of the NZ 18 foot skiff association along with SsangYong to nuture this talent and attempt to grow the class in the hope of returning to the dominant level of competition that once existed between NZ and Australia in these boats," says Brad Marsh. 18' Worlds: NZ team holding up:
23 Feb - The Worlds are halfway complete and the Kiwi teams are sitting in 12th, 18th and 26th, out of 30+ boats. "Of the New Zealand teams, Fishers Fine Arts / Helly Hansen heads the way in twelth place overall and firmly in the middle of a eight boat inner fleet fighting for the 8th to 15th placings. We have had a few lucky breaks fall our way and have shown some very good upwind pace to impress many of the Australians," says Brad Marsh. Read more >

Aussies take victory:
23 Feb - RNZYS Youth International update - Torvar Mirsky (Fremantle Sailing Club) & Evan Walker (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia) battled it out in the finals on the Waitemata Harbour yesterday, Mirsky taking the finals 3 to 1 - only losing in the second match because he sailed around the wrong top mark! Poor old chaps:
22 Feb - Remember how a couple of weeks ago we wrote about how Josh from North Sails was in the Southern Ocean on a delivery trip aboard Hugo Boss? Well, he sent this email this morning: "hi bicky, im guessing you heard we lost our mast the other day? a bit of a mess but we now have a jury rigg up which is the boom verticle and we have the storm jib up front and the bigger storm staysail up the back upside down like a trisail. it is blowing a good 50kts here from the north and really uncomfortable! we have been blown south a bit and are now at 55degrees south with 1400nm to chille, pretty much as far away from anywhere as you can get in the world!.really really cold here and some of the biggest waves i have ever seen! glad we got the jury rig up before the storm or we might have risked being rolled! the boat is ok and we only got minor hull damage and a hole in the cabintop + holes where all the stanchins were ripped off both sides. we are sailing ok and should be in chille in 10 days of so. say hi to everyone and tell them i am safe and well and sick of freezed dried food!!!! (might loose some weight!!) will keep you posted cheers PHATTY ps excuse the grammer and lack of capitals, holding the keyboard in onehand and getting a right hammering! pps maybe pass this onto zoe? she would love the gossip

Promising start to 18ft Worlds:
19 Feb - After two races the top placed Kiwi team lies in second place at the 18' skiff worlds. Brad Marsh writes: We have had two races of the 2006 J.J.Giltanans now and New Zealand is in a very good position. The team of Phil Airey, Alex Vallings and Shayne Young on the CT Sailbattens boat have had two third position finishes and are now placed second overall behind Casio Seapathfinder, an Australian Team. This is a fantastic effort for the guys and goes to prove that the advancements made to the NZ boats are keeping them competitive at the international level.  More >

Volvo boats depart Wellington:
19 Feb - Going into the gruelling Southern Ocean leg of the Volvo Ocean Race it's apparent that top honours could still be anybody's - despite ABN Amro 1's healthy lead of 10.5 points - the same number of points that the top boat could accumulate on this leg. Only eight points separate second and fifth place. Mike Sanderson, skipper of ABN AMRO ONE commented: “We are really looking forward to getting into the next leg although not so much the physical side. The leg has been playing havoc with our minds as it is a big one for us. If we can sail a solid leg again then maybe it’s going to be the turning point in the race for our team." Youth International Match Racing Champs:
19 Feb - From RNZYS - Day one of the Under 20 International Match racing regatta held on the Waitemata Harbour was off to an extremely slow start with the Elliott 6m Training BoatS remaining tied to the dock until midday. The Race Committee out on the course, report a light northerly was filling in and the boats left Westhaven Marina and racing began around 1pm. It was a gorgeous afternoon in the City of Sails with lots of full on match racing action, which kept the umpire team very busy! A Black Flag isqualification was given to Evan Walker (Cruising Yacht Club of Australia) who entered early, was clear astern and hit the other boat and then a luff that was judged too hard. This gave his opponent the RNZYS Pink girls team their second win for the day. The breeze was a constant 10 - 14knot northerly and a total of seven flights were completed.

Movistar victory:
16 Feb - In the battle for first place in the Melbourne-Wellington leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the Spanish entry, movistar, skippered by Dutchman Bouwe Bekking, finally broke the offshore domination of the Dutch yacht ABN AMRO ONE in the Volvo Ocean Race, by crossing the finish line in Wellington today, nine seconds ahead of the black boat, skippered by Kiwi Mike Sanderson from Auckland. The finish canon signalled Movistar’s finish at 13:09:26 with ABN AMRO ONE following at 13:09:35. It has been a tense 14 hours for these two teams, which began at 1000 GMT yesterday when movistar snatched back ABN AMRO ONE’s comfortable margin of 32 nautical miles as the wind died off Cape Farewell on the north western tip of New Zealand’s South Island. The next boat expected to finish leg three will be Pirates of the Caribbean (Paul Cayard).

Tis the season...:
13 Feb - It's definitely 'the season' where we crown new national champions in all sailing disciplines. Philip and Steve Keen became the new 470 national champions over the weekend, a promising sign on their Olympic campaign. Mike Snow-Hanson and Josh McCormick were placed second, and Andrew Brown, whose long-time crew Jamie Hunt was injured late last year in a road accident, raced for the first time with David Healy. Andrew and David won three of the last four races, finishing within one point of the second placegetters.

World ranked Kiwis:
12 Feb - New ISAF World Rankings for 2006 were announced last week and the Kiwi Olympic team is looking pretty promising in both boardsailing and women's keelboating. Jon-Paul TOBIN (NZL) grabbed the first ever top spot in the Men’s RS:X and Sharon FERRIS (NZL) leads her crew to the number one place in the Yngling. Andrew Murdoch has moved from a previous Laser ranking of 22 up to 11th spot, while Dan Slater jumped 13 points in the Finn rankings up to 17th. Jo Aleh improved five placings and is currently ranked 20th in the Laser Radial. The points scored at events counts towards a skipper’s Ranking points total which decides his Ranking position. Each skipper can count a maximum of seven events, with those which have taken place within the last twelve months holding a bonus percentage weighting.

8 Feb - ‘Hugo Boss’, the Open 60 skippered to numerous successes by British sailor single handed sailor Alex Thompson, will depart Australia this week on a 7,000mile crossing bound for South Africa, with North Sails' sales rep, Josh Tucker (aka BooBoo on Crew forums), aboard. North Sails NZ have just completed a new Code 5 for the boat, and Josh is assisting with a delivery to South America, prior to the boat sailing to Newport for a refit. While deep in the roaring forties, Josh and the delivery crew expect freezing temperatures, coupled with squally winds of up to 80 knots. Currently Nick Crabtree and Gautier Sergent are also away in Melbourne working with three of the Volvo Ocean Race teams, and five of the North Sails team are also about to depart for St Barths Regatta in the Caribbean, before progressing on to Antigua Race Week.

Regatta to identify NZ's top female sailing crew:
7 Feb - The Women’s Keelboat Nationals for 2006 will attract the best of New Zealand’s female keelboat teams and seek to acknowledge the strongest fleet racing team in the country, on 1 and 2 April. The organizers, Royal Akarana Yacht Club, anticipate entries from Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington and the South Island. The regatta will be held using the Farr MRX fleets, with teams of seven sailors per boat. “We’ve already seen some strong teams out training and competing on the boats,” says Penny Grayson, spokesperson for the Royal Akarana Yacht Club. “We anticipate a fleet of very competitive contenders.” Those who have already expressed commitment include skippers Fiona Macky, Melissa Rossaak, Jan Dawson and Karleen Dixon, who won the regatta when it was last held in 2003. Past winners include America’s Cup sailor and Olympian Lesley Egnot, Amy Waring, and Sharon Ferris, who in 2005 win a silver medal at the YngLing Worlds. The regatta is sponsored by the Southern Trust and entries close on 17 Feb. For more information visit www.rayc.org.nz or telephone the club on 09 524 9945.

Sail Auckland:
7 Feb - Lack of wind translated to a lack of racing for sailors competing at Sail Auckland. Waitangi Day on the Waitemata was warm, sunny and calm and only the 420 and Laser Radial fleet managed one final race today, the final day of the regatta. For the remainder of the Olympic and invited classes the day was mostly spent ashore and final results are as they stood at the end of racing yesterday.
Yachting New Zealand Olympic Squad sailors took out the Laser and Laser Radial, while in the Tornado, squad members McIntosh and Kendall were just beaten by the European team. Dan Slater won all the races he sailed in, however having not competed on day one his final result was second place in the Finn. JP Tobin won the men’s RS:X board sailing and Nikola Girke of Canada won the womens. Full results will be available on www.sailauckland.org.nz
