Crew's full coverage > Posted 31/08/2006 As seen on SA...: 30 Aug - It takes an American sailing website to tell us about a great new boat built in NZ, 'Strum' which is both water ballasted, affordable and has a lifting keel, as well as an interesting rig configuration. One of our readers spotted it this week. Check in at our forums for more info > Posted 30/08/2006 Garage sale: 30 Aug - One man's junk is another's treasure, as they say, and Richmond Yacht Club are holding a 'bring and buy' sale for used boat parts, on Sunday 10 September, between 11 and 2, in the clubhouse. There'll be a bbq sausage sizzle, and the bar will be open. If you wish to donate old gear for a good cause, proceeds from the sale of this will go to a very good cause : the Richmond's women's sailing team who will be competing in the nationals later this year. Be there! Posted 30/08/2006 Mixed success for Dan: 30 Aug - Mixed success for Kiwi Dan Slater in Qindao, in the heavier conditions which suit him. On the final day of fleet racing, he's placing sixth and could make fourth with a good performance in the double points medal race. Three other Kiwis are in the top ten. With the 178 berth marina due to open in December, the lease is a big opportunity for the Club which is very active in both small and big boat sailing. Under terms of the lease, the Club has five years to rebuild the clubhouse and introduce new, modernised facilities. 'The club is now in the secure position of being able to redevelop and provide new and ungraded facilities for its present and future members, and the public of Auckland," says the Club in a press statement. Posted 24/08/2006 Sports boat safety: 24 Aug - From YNZ - Yachting New Zealand is carrying out a review of the Safety Regulations relating to Sports Boats at the request of a group of owners who are concerned about the stability of some boats in the fleet. 'It may well be that changes to the Safety Regulations are made in the near future. While it would be incorrect to anticipate the outcome of this process it would be hoped that boats which are safe will not be affected by the changes,' says the YNZ newsletter. Posted 24/08/2006 IRC continues to grow: 24 Aug - Big ups to the Squadron which has organised three weigh-in days for boats wishing to obtain IRC certificates. RNZYS > Posted 24/08/2006 Maximus breaks Round the Island record: 23 Aug - We can be proud of our newest supermaxi: opting to opt out of racing at Cowes Week earlier this month, Maximus instead headed out to break the record for sailing around the Isle of Wight. She tacked three times and completed the course in three hours, 20 minutes and 9 seconds. Both breeze and tide on the course were favourable, and she beat the five year old record set by 'Leopard' by around 50 minutes. Next up for Maximus is the Maxi World Cup where she will come head to head with both Wild Oats and Alfa Romeo. It starts on 4 September. Posted 23/08/2006 Aleh running second in China: 23 Aug - From JODIE PERKINS - Two days in, Laser Radial sailor Jo Aleh is the best placed of the kiwi team at this Olympic test event, moving up to second place after three races. Already the venue is proving to be challenging with light winds. “Racing got underway in between 6-8 knots of wind from the east, before veering to south easterly, with a light fog over the race courses,” reports the regatta website. “The light winds, combined with the currents in Fushan Bay, proved challenging for many of the sailors.” Full story > Posted 23/08/2006 Smart new website: 23 Aug - The Royal NZ Yacht Squadron has a smart looking new website which cuts a dash for those looking for race results, race details, photos and news. The website was designed by Frontend Design, which is headed up by Simon Dickey, winner of the 2006 Winter Matchracing Series. It's looking great. Take a look > Posted 23/08/2006 300 smart people...: 21 Aug - At the beginning of this month the North Sails Race Clinic Tour took place. Read on > Posted 21/08/2006 Why is our fleet dwindling?: 18 Aug - DUTHIE LIDGARD of International Marine Brokers laments the quality of the NZ race fleet and ponders why we are resistant to importing new production race boats: " The majority of articles I read are discussions about “turboing” 20 year old boats and importing old race boats. Where have the days gone of new cruiser / racer fleets? There are so many quality production boats around in the world today at affordable prices, yet NZ doesn’t seem to take advantage of them and I don’t understand why!" Thanks for bearing with me & I'll see you back on the water very soon. - from Zoe (and my three week old proof-reader) Posted 18/08/2006 Holy Cowe: 14 Aug - Will Calver - that's the guy that makes a living taking photos of boats in the Waitemata while perilously balanced in a rubber dinghy - took in the sights and sounds of Cowes Week 2006. Let them know > Posted 10/08/2006 And the money goes to....: 10 Aug - Well not money, but some cool goodies for the best response to this photo: First place - and a Trade A Boat magazine subscription and Gotcha Straps - goes to Grunta: "Forget my face, it's the SPF 20 in the engine thats really got me worried." Honourable mention and some Gotcha Straps go to David Lackey "Yachties should be conscious of the risks of too much exposure to the sun - particularly melanoma, which often present as a small back spot, but quickly escalate in size." Posted 10/08/2006 13 boats go IRC in northland: From Lesley Haslar, BOI Sailing Week - New Zealand is changing to a new handicap system, bringing it in line with the rest of the world; the Bay-Boaties are leading the way by example. A big event took place over last weekend, right here at Kerikeri Cruising Club Doves Bay – the first grouping of local yachts were “measured and weighed” on Saturday (a Load-Cell was brought up from Auckland by Martin Hannon, Yachting New Zealander’s official measurer), then the sail-measurements were done inside the Club on Sunday. Thirteen boats were weighted this session, with more to follow. Posted 10/08/2006 Snap crackle and pop: 7 Aug - From SSANZ - The second race, the SIMRAD 60 kicked off at 9:00. Conditions at the start were somewhat lighter than what was forecast, and the breeze was very patchy until clear of Rangitoto. This resulted in some big gains and losses. The breeze built all day averaging over 20 knots with gusts of over 30 knots at the finish which gave competitors plenty of challenges. Both Oracle and Akarana Express lost their masts, High Profile lost it's rudder and Hooters broke the front crossbeam. In total we had 29 retirements who had all made it back to land safety by last night. X Factor, Wingz, Hard Labour and Rattle and Rum were the quickest boats around their respective courses.
