The Butcher

2 September 2011

Just a bit of an add on to the around the yards feature from last week. Here is The Butcher getting a major remodel in Tauranga. We are hoping to be back in the water in early October. Along with a new keel, we are adding a prod. We are on the hunt to buy some used Asymmetrical kites to use while we save up our money for new ones! Rough dimensions are luff 17.5M and foot of 9M, but anything close will work. Maybe someone out there would like a bit of beer money in exchange for a sail????

Cheers,

Laurie Jury (NZL) Wins the 2011 Knickerbocker Cup

28 August 2011

Laurie Jury, Zoke Kiwimatch (NZL), with crew Logan Fraser, Michael Edmonds, Jarl Brothwick and Matthew Stevens has won the 2011 Knickerbocker Cup. Sally Barkow, Team 7 Match Race (USA) was second, followed by Nicolai Sehested, TRE-FOR Match Racing (DEN).  Due to light wind on both days and lightening storms interrupting racing on Thursday, the regatta ended before the completion of the round robin, forcing the results to be calculated on a percentage basis.  For his efforts, Jury and his team will have his name permanently affixed to the Knickerbocker Cup along with other match racers such as Dave Perry (USA), Ed Baird (USA), Terry McLaughlin (CAN), Paul Cayard, USA, , Peter Gilmour, (AUS), Russell Coutts, (NZL), and the newer hot match racers Reuben Corbett  NZL) and Phil Robertson (NZL).  They also receive an automatic entry into the Argo Bermuda Gold Group Cup at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in Hamilton, Bermuda in early October.

Racing at the Knickerbocker Cup is by invitation only, but Mother Nature must have missed that email and sent Irene to leave her calling card.  By end of day Friday, the local Office of Emergency Management had closed to bay to all activity and began evacuating residents with homes on the perimeter of the bay.  The officials in New York City announced plans to shut down airports, subway and bridges by 2:00 pm on Saturday.  Manhasset Bay YC, the Organizing Authority, pulled the plug on racing Friday night and held the Awards Ceremony immediately after scores were made available.

Race Committee tried valiantly to catch some wind on Manhasset Bay on Thursday; but with light wind, then a 2-hour thunder and lightening storm delay, they were lucky to have completed the first 11 flights.  Everyone had high hopes for finishing the 22-flight round robin, but again the wind was light, and shifting all over the bay.  Those who were able to catch the win were rewarded with crossing the finish line first. Lucky for us, this year the Knickerbocker Cup had the Swedish Match 40’s with their huge mains that helped in the light wind.

Though it was unfortunate that all competitors didn’t get a chance to have a go at all eleven team, such is the nature of sailing.  At the end of the day, it was Laurie Jury who played the wind shifts and had a stellar performance.  He is one of the four teams who will move onto Oakcliff to compete for the Grand Slam Series.  At this point, he is in the lead with two second-lace wins in Chicago and Detroit. With his win here at the Knickerbocker Cup, it will be interesting to see what the other three teams – Nicolai Sehested, William Tiller and Taylor Canfield have in store for Jury.   Whoever takes the prize, they will be rewarded with an automatic entry into the 2012 Congressional Cup out in Long Beach, CA.

Special thanks to Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, for loaning their Swedish Match 40s to the Knickerbocker Cup.

Saturday Arvo in the Tropics

27 August 2011

I finished work early today so did what any self respecting Crew ogre would do, went for a look around at themarina and the yards, and there was lots of interest.

First, the old Rob Roy has changed hands (the new oners are GregandSue on the forums, she's looking in fine fettle for a lady who has been around a while. Who can shed some light on her history for us? More photos here.

Also at Gulf Harbour was Grantham Flyer (Lidgard?), looking a bit sad, she's been on th ehard for a long time now and is slowly deteriorating. It'n not too late, but I wouldn't like to see her neglected for a lot longer. Again, does anyone know the story?

Then down to Weiti to see Tigre looking good and finally converted back to a sailing boat. That's the old wing mast off the Young 8.4 Wild Thing. More photos here.

Plus it looks like the Weiti fleet will have another of those pesky Young boats to contend with soon.

Domino 2 is about to lose her IOR bumps.

And Charlatan (Fish and Mr Fish in the forums) has been in the shed for an extreme makeover, can't wait till they get her out into the sunlight to see what it looks like.

Laurie Jury Leads at Knickerbocker Cup

27 August 2011

Jury and Barkow Leading the Pack at 2011 Knickerbocker Cup

Mother Nature is trying the patience of everyone here at the Knickerbocker Cup this year.  Manhasset Bay is known for its fluky winds and variable conditions, but this year the bay as full of surprises.  Teams selected for the morning flights faced unstable winds, a lightening storm delay mid-day, and squalls from all points on the bay.  But by the end of the day, Race Committee had completed 10 flights and leaders emerged from the mess of weather.

Laurie Jury, Zoke Kiwimatch, NZL, is the story of the day.  He may have lost the battle at the Detroit Cup in a close final to Australian Jordan Reece, he is winning the war here at the Knickerbocker Cup.  His 5 for 5 after 10 flights and this is his first time racing the Swedish Match 40s.  “It was a most exciting day.  We had a lost of close races and everything went our way.  We were able to sail the boat smoothly.”  Paul Cuneo, Color Commentator, added “their crew work was flawless.  Jury was on fire!”

Sally Barkow was on fire too.  After waiting all morning for the first group of racers to finish their flights, she was loaded for bear. Her first match against front runner Jury was proof of her determination to better her record of past appearances at the Cup.  An early penalty forced Barkow to take some serious action.  According to Chris Love, Director of Video Production, “As she was leading Jury coming into the windward mark, Barkow luffed up and tried to draw Jury in to either draw a penalty or get him out of position so she could extend to get rid of hers  At first Jury was reluctant to engage but then he took an opportunity to go over the top. Sally kept him on the hook, made him tack and then tried to duck his stern, but didn’t quite make it.”  Contact!  Her bow bumper snagged his back stay which broke when the boats separated. Game Jury.

A furious Barkow turned the loss into an intensity that brought her wins for the remainder of the day.  She quickly dispensed with William Tiller, Full Metal Jacket Racing (NZL), Nicholai Sehested, TRE-FOR Match Racing (DEN), and Jordan Reece, True Blue Racing (AUS).  One of the highlights of the day was the Tiller-Barkow race.  Just after rounding the second windward mark beginning the final downwind leg, Sally was about 1.5 boat legs behind and expertly rolled Tiller to windward.  The wind fell out of his chute and Barkow blew by him and he couldn’t catch up.

Shawn Bennett, Team Bennett (USA) is another team to watch closely.  He won an automatic entry into the Knickerbocker Cup this year for his big win at the USMRC at Detroit YC last year.  In extremely difficult wind conditions, he managed to pull off four wins with 5 matches during the morning flights.

PRO Sue Reilly, speaking about the leeward gate, used for the first time at the KCUP, had this to say, “I was surprised with the amount of boats that split sides at the gate.  Other events that have used a gate 90 - 95% of the time both boats round the same gate.  I don’t know what the stats were today, but it was more than I had expected. Dave Perry might be on to something.”

With the thread of a direct hit by Irene, RC is scrambling to finish the Round Robin quickly in the event the Harbor Master closes the bay to all activity. They will try to finish the Round Robin on Friday, but with wind conditions predicted to be light (the calm before the storm?) it will take some magic from Sue Reilly and her committee to get this done.  For Reilly, this should be no problem.

Many thanks go to Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, for the use of their Swedish Match 40s.

Kiwi solo sailor smashes around Australia record

Kiwi solo sailor Bruce Arms, in his 14 metre catamaran Big Wave Rider, finished his record attempt on the 18th August 2011 at 9:41:06 am AEST setting a new round Australia record.

Bruce, renowned sailor and two-time winner of the Solo Trans-Tasman yacht race, completed his solo, non-stop, and un-assisted sail around Australia in 38 days 21 hours 40 minutes and 42 seconds, making Bruce the fastest solo sailor around Australia and the first to do so in a Multihull (Catamaran).

Bruce reflects in his blog on completing the trip on August 18th: - “It was big relief and a huge weight off my shoulders to finally cross that finish line, as I didn’t have to be on edge anymore and be constantly ready for anything. It was great to see all the boats out there to welcome me in. Just after I crossed the line a boat came over with my wife Suzanne and Jessica Watson it was great to get big hugs and kisses from them as I had been waiting a long time for that.”

The existing Performance Certificate held by Ian Thomson/SOS Ocean Racing of 42 days 5 hours 33 minutes and 55 seconds was broken by 3 days 7 hours 53 minutes and 13 seconds.

The World Record will subject to official ratification by World Speed Sailing Record Council (WSSRC).

Auckland Club Reduces Fees!!!!

26 August 2011

This seemed worth repeating:
At the AGM for the Royal Akarana Yacht Club last night there was a collective double-take from the members as a cut in membership fees was proposed and approved.

As an example the Senior membership was reduced from $300 to $195 p.a.. Although the club reported a profitable year it highlighted the influx of new membership from the successful RAYC Sailing Academy and also the huge growth in the surfski members as the main reason that the change was affordable.

Nice to see a club growing, and finding some ways to restructure its finances and reduce fees.

Georgia Racing

22 August 2011

Hamilton Island Synopsis - Days 1 & 2

Nearly midway through Hamilton Island Race Week, Georgia is sitting in fourth spot in the IRC Grand Prix division, after consistent performances in three races and, hopefully, breathing space to drop its worst result so far, an eighth in the windward-leeward longhaul course of Saturday's Lindeman Island race.

"At the top mark – which is a passage through two islands – we were in average shape, one or two boat lengths behind SHOGUN, a TP52 against which we have had lots of close races previously," recounts owner and skipper, Jim Farmer.

"We had gone quite well on the beat but two-thirds of the way up had fallen between two areas of pressure and that probably converted what would otherwise have been a good beat into an average one."

Then the kite hoist turned bad when the gennaker caught and tore on a stanchion, forcing the crew to peel and run home minus the gennaker best-suited to the conditions.

"Nevertheless we made good pace and three quarters of the way down had ! closed in on SHOGUN, only to lose it all again when they gybed away into more pressure.  Chris Dickson did a good job in directing us past another TP52 shortly before the finish but the overall result was a disappointing 8th."

Sunday's sailing saw three windward-leewards in strong conditions.

A race committee error saw the windward mark placed too far out, making what should have been a 2.3mile leg, into a 4.6mile one.

The wind built to 25 knots through the day, with lumpy seas and opportunities for wild surfing on the runs, with the deck of the boat often awash.

GEORGIA finished the day with two fourths, and a fifth, and today's race is another island race, with even stronger wind to be predicted and tomorrow more still for the 60 mile long island race.  Wednesday is an off day – a great opportunity for the three Rs of regatta lay days: Rest, Relaxation, and Repairs.
